Kings Furlong Junior School

Growing and learning together

Reading- 5 times a week please!

At Kings Furlong Junior School, we believe that reading is an essential life skill.  As children progress through the Junior School, they need to develop higher reading skills such as inference and deduction.  They also need to develop stamina for reading longer texts.

Therefore we are making a change to the home reading routine from the week beginning 13th January. We appreciate that home life can be busy so we are asking that children read five days out of seven every week.  This may be out loud to a parent but it may, at times, be appropriate for more confident readers to sometimes read quietly to themselves for fifteen minutes and a parent sign to say this has been done.  We will continue to work on developing reading at school in our Guided reading sessions.  Children will therefore need to have their reading logswith them EVERYDAY for these sessions.  Every child will be provided with a zipped bag to make it easier to transport reading logs and books to and from school.

We have just spent over £2000 on new books to encourage children to choose books which interest them.  Some of these are levelled on the colour bands but some are based on the phonics approach that some children are learning in their Read, Write, Inc. lessons.  Children who are free readers will be monitored so that they can be encouraged to make choices of a wide range of reading genre.

These changes will be fully explained to the children and for it to run smoothly, we do need every child to take part.  Therefore if children do not read the required five times out of seven or bring a reading log every day, they will be asked to spend part of their playtimes reading.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate in contacting us at school and we will be pleased to discuss the new system with you.
